Ovarian Cancer Canada is pleased to announce that Dr. Steven Narod, a world leader in the field of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, is this year's recipient of the 2014 Karen Campbell National Award for Research Excellence.
The charity will honour Dr. Steven Narod at its annual "LOVE HER" gala on Thursday, February 27 at Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto, the first of three fundraising galas across the country, proudly presented by CIBC.
Dr. Narod, a Toronto researcher, and his team identified founder mutations to the BRCA genes in the Ashkenazi-Jewish, French-Canadian and Bahamian populations. Dr. Narod directs one of the largest international longitudinal studies with a database of over 14,000 women who carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.
"Ovarian Cancer Canada is honoured to recognize Dr. Narod's decades of international research that have deepened our understanding of hereditary ovarian cancer and moved us toward better prevention and treatment of this disease. His body of work exemplifies the very definition of the award," says Elisabeth Baugh, CEO, Ovarian Cancer Canada.
Starting in 1987, Dr. Narod studied hereditary breast cancer at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, with Dr. Gilbert Lenoir. Dr. Narod is a co-discoverer of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, and since their discoveries in 1994 and 1995, he has studied the distribution of mutations worldwide. Women who inherit mutations to either their BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene are at increased risk for both ovarian and breast cancer.

"Our team conducts research that has immediate consequences. One likes to think that the impact will be seen as soon as the research is out - that it will change practice and change lives."

The first of three LOVE HER events takes place in Toronto on February 27 at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex, with hosts Beverly Thomson and Marci Ien ofCanada AM. The event will feature a haute fashion show by Toronto fashion destination, Andrews, a live auction by Canadian speaker, host, and award-winning creative director Ron Tite, and a stunning performance by chanteuse, Divine Brown. Along with the fireman's raffle and fabulous assortment of silent auction items, guests are encouraged to bid high and to raise generous donations in the fight against ovarian cancer.
The second event will be held in Calgary at Hotel Arts on March 6, with co-hosts Jessica Holmesand Diane Francis keeping the crowd entertained alongside the musical stylings of Sophie Serafino and a stunning fashion show by local womenswear boutique OOH LA LA. The third will be in Vancouver on May 28 at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel, where guests will enjoy stunning panoramic views while enjoying a fashion show, live auction and more.
