The
view is of a dark, windowless bar. Stale beer and cigarette smoke set
the scene. Two strangers sit together as the women mumbles in Russian
and broken English. Cinematic and bleak,
it is a stark contrast to the anthemic tone of The Wooden Sky's song
"Saturday Night" which is heard here and there, rattling through the
shitty speakers. The woman, briefly inspired in her dismal environment
by the song, asks the bartender to turn it up. No one moves. She does it
herself. This is a glimpse of life, somewhere else.
For
director Scott Cudmore (F&#%ed Up, METZ) he approached "Saturday
Night" as short film rather than a traditional music video. "I was
interested in how a person reacts to a song and that is kind of what
the video is about on one level...Music videos are usually a kind of
visual interpretation of the song and if I had done that here, then this
video would probably have a similar anthemic, forward momentum in the
images, but I wanted to go against that and just let the characters
interpret the song rather than the editing and the images. I wanted to
approach the lyrics directly with this video. I didn't want it to tell
anybody how to feel about these people, I just wanted them to exist and
let the song fill in the blanks."
The Wooden Sky - Saturday Night (Official)
Singer Gavin Gardiner describes working with Scott saying, "He
has a way of finding beauty and love in unique situations and this
video is a great example of that. It may be them against the world but
at least they have each other, maybe that's all you need."
The Wooden Sky are currently on tour across Canada in support of their fourth album, Let's be ready.
which was released on September 2, 2014 on the band's new label Chelsea
