Beakerhead 2016 program:  a science and art spectacle of unusual proportion

From a robotic whale outfitted with sensory equipment to fire-breathing botany, Beakerhead is at it again with this year’s smash up of art, science and engineering, Wednesday, September 14 through Sunday, September 18.

The Calgary-born spectacle brings together more than 150 arts and engineering collaborators from across the globe to build, compete and exhibit interactive works of art and entertainment throughout city venues and public spaces.  Now in its fourth year, Beakerhead ‘s program promises to, once again, delight curious minds and allow cultural creativity to emerge.

“We like to think of it as a giant sandbox of human ingenuity – an experience where you learn by doing,” said CEO and co-founder, Mary Anne Moser.  “When you throw open the doors to science and engineering to a welcoming world of art and entertainment, a lot can happen.”

The Beakerhead line-up for 2016 stages over 65 mechanical sculptures, interactive street art, classrooms of creators, unexpected culinary delights, larger-than-life theatre and spectacular performances – all in five days.

And if that’s not enough, prepare for a night full of quirky surprises (of unusual proportion) in a massive outdoor gallery of art and engineering feats, like you’ve never seen before.  BEAKERNIGHT will illuminate the streets of Bridgeland on Saturday night with live music, beakerbar . . . and of course, the odd pedal-powered brain, can-crushing cow, ray gun rocket (or is it a UFO?), hamster wheel-powered tricycle and the international public premiere of Calgary’s own Blazin’ Lily Gals and their fire-breathing botany, to name a few.

Beakernight:  Saturday, September 17, 8:30 – 11:30 pm.

Beakerhead events take place indoors and out, and most are FREE.  Ticketed performances include:

  • Torched: A secret warehouse that uses cold steel and hot fire for an unusual and exquisite dining experience, including blow-torched shanks and skateboard-churned ice cream.  Wednesday, September 14, 7:00 pm.
  • Rock ‘n’ Roll History of Space Exploration: Back by popular demand, this part science, part rock ‘n’ roll live show, led by Jay Ingram, former host of Daily Planet on Discovery Channel, explores the scientific imagination and our quest to reach Mars. Two shows:  September 17, 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
  • Love Lab:  The Darker Side of Relationships: Dr. Susan Boon from the University of Calgary and Dr. Stephen Yoshimura from the University of Montana, explore revenge in this animated evening, held in one of the world’s oldest love labs – a pub! Thursday, September 15, 8:00 pm
Last year 112,000 people took part in Beakerhead, including 24,000 school students, all made possible through the generous support of community donors, corporate sponsors, and government funding.

“Beakerhead is a fantastic opportunity for Albertans and visitors to enjoy a celebration of imagination and innovation,” said Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism.  “We are proud to help support Beakerhead in its efforts to inspire local, national and international visitors, artists, engineers and scientists to come together to create a unique cultural experience.”

“Bringing art and science together to inspire innovation and creative thinking has a powerful role to play in our community,” said Gary Bunio, General Manager, Strategic Technology, Suncor. “Having an opportunity to support Beakerhead as they open the doors to science and engineering through a world of art and entertainment creates possibilities larger than any of us can imagine on our own.”

Beakerhead 2016 will take place in Calgary, September 14 – 18, 2016.  The preliminary event schedule can be found at beakerhead.com. Most events are free.
