That's a Wrap! NXNE 2016
NORTH BY NORTHEAST (NXNE), celebrated it's 22nd year June 13 - 19, 2016 with some major changes and new Festival initiatives resulting in a week of music, gaming and fun!
During the seven-day festival, 200 artists performed at over a dozen venues across the city for NXNE Club Land including packed performances by Kamasi Washington, MTRKRFT, Screaming Females, King Khan and The Shrines, The Joy Formidable, and TUNS.
NXNE Future Land at the Ted Rogers School of Management focused on the video game industry for the first time, with sessions from industry leaders discussing how music plays a key role in gaming. The founder of Atari, Nolan Bushnell gave a keynote speech, while Mayor John Tory discussed how Toronto is working to be a "power player" in the tech and gaming industries.
NXNE Game Land at Yonge-Dundas Square saw 25,000 visitors over three days with musical performances by Fast Romantics, Zeus and Jane's Party, and a surprise appearance by Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Fans were also treated to a free a cappella competition judged by Anna Camp and Skylar Astin, co-stars of Perfect Pitch, followed by a screening of the film, presented by Courtyard Marriott.
The inaugural year of the NXNE Port Lands saw nearly 8,000 attendees over two days at this new Festival space with performances by Schoolboy Q, Ghostface Killah, Daniel Caesar, Shamir, Father John Misty, Mother Mother and Dan Mangan.
"We are very proud to have utilized the Port Lands for NXNE for the first time this year. What a beautiful spot to enjoy a weekend of music," said Michael Hollett, President and Managing Director of NXNE. "We look forward to taking advantage of all the possibilities the Port Lands offers in years to come".
