PondView Icewine wins best in show at prestigious Decanter Asia Wine Awards

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ont. — Canada is renowned around the world for producing the best Icewine on the planet, and PondView Estate Winery has been recognized as the best of the best.

The 2015 Riesling Icewine that comes from the Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyard surrounding the winery has been awarded the Platinum Best in Show medal for sweet wines at the prestigious 2016 Decanter Asia Wine Awards.

“From identifying the best grapes in the vineyard for the sweet treat, through to waiting for the temperature to plummet, picking the frozen grapes and then crushing the concentrated juice from it, crafting the ideal Icewine is truly an intense labour of love. We call it Extreme Winemaking,” says Sommelier Marcel Morgenstern, Director of Sales at PondView. “There are so many Canadian wineries making so many good Icewines, that it is an honour that our Riesling Icewine has been selected as the best in what is one of the world’s most competitive wine competitions.”

The Decanter Asia Wine Awards recognize quality wines and provide consumers across Asia with a trusted source of recommendations. Chaired by Steven Spurrier, Chairman of the Decanter World Wine Awards, U.K. and Decanter’s Consultant Editor, judging took place in Hong Kong in early September.  Winners were selected by a professional judging panel that rigorously blind taste wines from around the world, organized in flights to ensure the very best tasting conditions.
