Cordae Teases New Album, Admits his Admiration for Rihanna and Reveals His Top Five List of Biggest Influencers on The Spout Podcast

During a candid and heartfelt interview on The Spout Podcast, Cordae sat down with Host Tamara Dhia to cover a range of topics, including the inspiration behind his latest single "Make Up Your Mind," the possibility of a collab album with J. Cole and Anderson .Paak, news about his upcoming album, and the story behind his decision to release "Doomsday" after the tragic passing of Juice WRLD.

Cordae's latest single, "Make Up Your Mind," is a departure from his previous releases, as he describes it, "Well, it's definitely more of a funky type, a groovy vibe, man, just having fun in the studio."

The rapper went on to explain how "Make Up Your Mind" represents a shift in his artistic expression and how his hesitation made him feel like he was putting himself “in a box as an artist.”

Cordae further delves into his evolution as an artist, saying, "I feel like that fear of caring about what people think or people may say about them, or think of them, stops them from getting to the place that they want to. For me, it is the opposite. I got to a place of success, and I'm still on a grind. I'm still climbing; it's still so much more I'm going to do. But I got to a place of success, and that's when I started to care...So now, I'm like, in order for me to get to that next level of my life and career, but more so just life as a human being, as a person, as an adult, I just, I just don't give a s*** what people say anymore.”

Cordae expressed his admiration for Rihanna due to her unapologetic attitude, stating, "That’s why she’s Rihanna. That's why she's so successful. All the most successful artists just don't give a f***...I think you just have to have that mentality. You just can't give a s***."

When questioned about the release date of his next album, the rapper humorously quipped, "I'm like one song away. I'm really one song away from being done. Like, for sure I'm one song away, but that one song be taking a long time."

Cordae promises the new album is "more vulnerable than ever" and that he is "trying different sounds." He expressed his dedication to self-improvement, stating, "I'm just trying to stretch the s** like, just bring out the best from within me because it's all there. But just challenge myself like no other and just try to get better. Just real boot camp, you know what I'm saying? So, just be honest with myself too, about the music."

Cordae went on during the interview to shed light on the emotional journey behind the decision to release "Doomsday" following the tragic passing of Juice WRLD. The rapper revealed that the decision was influenced by his close collaborator, Cole Bennett, who treated the project with "tender love and care."

Cordae explained, "My fear was there because out of what people may think... it wasn't ever a question of, is this the right thing to do because we know, like, this song and video would have come out with me, Cole Bennett, and Juice WRLD, if he was still alive, you know what I'm saying, like 1,000,000%. My last text with Juice is we talking about the video. So, it was never a question of ‘Is this the right thing to do?’ My only fear with us doing a deepfake AI video is what other people may or may not have thought."

When asked about his future aspirations and what more he hopes to achieve in his career, his response showcased his unwavering commitment to growth with his perspective on success moving beyond accolades and labels.

"You know what I try not to look at (labels) because if you put too many labels, like technically I'm a multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated, Emmy award-winning, worldwide tour-selling-out artist. But if you put that as a label, it's always a way you can spice things up. That's just the reality of like, I've really done a worldwide tour, sold out. I really gotten, you know, nominated for Grammys. I really won Emmys. I really have multiple platinum records. But if you just become a part of that label more so, like, the tags that they throw on you, you’ll lose sight of, like, the true journey. The reality is I'm still at the beginning of my journey. That's just the reality of it. It's still, like, I still have a lot of work to do. I still got a lot of growing to do."
