Hip-Hop Artist Duane “D.O.” Gibson Appointed to the Order of Canada

Canadian hip-hop artist and author Duane “D.O.” Gibson has been appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours presented by the Governor General, recognizing his global reach in hip-hop and outstanding contributions to youth empowermenteducation, and community leadership through music and the arts.

This announcement comes during a milestone year for Gibson, who will also appear on Season 12 of The Amazing Race Canada, premiering July 7 on CTV and Crave. Competing alongside longtime friend and Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Maestro Fresh Wes, the duo will showcase teamwork, resilience, and cultural pride on one of Canada’s most beloved reality television series.

Known internationally for his elite freestyle rap skills, Gibson is a globally recognized Guinness World Record-setting hip-hop artist, author and educator whose empowering music, books and youth programs have reached over 4 000 schools. Founder of Stay Driven, he motivates students nationwide through messages of resilience, leadership, literacy and positive decision-making, blending artistry with meaningful social impact.

Over the past 25 years, he has brought his work to audiences in 15 countries across five continents, earning international recognition as an independent artist, entrepreneur, educator, and author.

Beyond the stage, Gibson has written three books, founded the national Black Canadian 365 educational initiative – which has reached more than 50,000 students and community members – and created the Northern Power Summit, a leadership and entrepreneurship conference connecting youth, artists, business leaders, and community changemakers.

“Hip-hop gave me a voice, but education gave me purpose,” said Gibson. “This honour represents not just my journey, but everyone who believed in the power of music and mentorship to change lives.”

As Gibson enters this next chapter, his appointment to the Order of Canada stands as a national recognition of a career dedicated not only to artistic excellence but to empowering the next generation of Canadians. From breaking world records and reaching students in communities across the country to building educational initiatives and inspiring the youth through the arts, Gibson's impact continues to be felt far beyond music.
