After police found discrepancies in her story about an alleged acid attack, Bethany Storro admitted on Thursday that her injuries were self-inflicted. The 28-year-old Vancouver, Washington native may now face criminal charges for the hoax.
2 weeks ago, Storro made national headlines when she claimed a black woman threw acid in her face at night as she was about to get in her car after buying a pair of sunglasses. She claimed her attacker said, "Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?" before splashing the acid in her face.
Law enforcement began their investigation looking for a black woman with a ponytail, as Storro described her. Following several interviews with the victim and her family officers began to find holes in her story.
Police Chief Clifford Cook said at an afternoon conference that splash patterns and other parts of the story, like wearing sunglasses at night, led to the unraveling of Storro's tale.
"All things didn't add up to the circumstance," Cook said.
The police said they are not ready to reveal Storro’s motive behind concocting the story, and they describe her as being in a "fragile mental state."
