Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 04/27/2014

Iggy Azalea enters the chart with "The New Classic," Future lands with "Honest" and Pharrell's "G I R L" keeps him in the Top 5.

This week, Iggy Azalea and Future enter the Billboard Top 200 albums chart with The New Classic and Honest, respectively. Meanwhile, Pharrell holds on to a Top 5 slot on the chart with his most recent album, G I R L.

Future's Honest Effort Lands At #2

Future's Honest landed in the #2 spot and sold 53,352 units in its first week. Honest earned a 3 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "While he doesn’t completely remedy the flaws that held back Pluto, 'Future Hendrix' has incrementally improved," HipHopDX says in its review. "He’s still plagued by bouts of lazy writing and the inclusion of older songs such as 'Karate Chop,' 'Sh!t' and 'Honest' have the unintended effect of making the project feel stale at times. 'Move That Dope' and 'Benz Friendz' may contend for two of 2013’s best collaborations, and having focused assists from Pusha T, Pharrell and Andre 3000 don’t hurt. As a soloist, Future is learning to play to his strengths. No one realistically expects Future to make the type of leap Three Stacks did between Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and ATLiens. But if he expounds on the type of substance he hints at on 'Special,' his album cuts will be as equally potent as his singles. For now, he’s returned with a slightly updated, less flawed version of 2012’s Pluto. It’s not the classic balance of style and substance ushered in by the Dungeon Family’s first generation. But it does help further the argument that both elements aren’t mutually exclusive."

Iggy Azalea's The New Classic Debuts At #3

Iggy Azalea took the #3 spot this week by selling 52,392 copies of her The New Classic album. The project earned a 2.5 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "The New Classic is a musical throne upon which the new blonde princess of Pop can rest her ample posterior," HipHopDX says in its review. "As Rap and Pop synergize again—yet this time without significantly embarrassing results—it opens the gate for Iggy Azalea to have an opportunity to shine. Sometimes, when Pop marketing and urban music perfectly commingle, we get Michael Jackson’s Thriller. In other cases, Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic aims high, but ultimately falls flat."

Pharrell's G I R L Remains In Top 5

Pharrell's G I R L remains in the Top 5 this week, a placement it earned by selling 21,107 units to be this week's #4 album on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart. P's G I R L dropped from last week's sales by 36 percent. The effort sold 32,858 units last week. Overall, Pharrell has sold 325,483 copies of G I R L in eight weeks of availability.
