TAPAS: SPANISH DESIGN FOR FOOD
June 12 to August 10

Curated by Juli Capella - the man also behind Design Exchange's 2012 exhibition Bravos - and organized by AC/E Acción Cultural Española, Tapas presents a selection of Spanish designs dedicated to the world of food. From its raw materials and preparation techniques to its theoretical beliefs and inspired designs, Spain's gastronomic culture crosses boundaries and unquestionably constitutes a hugely valuable heritage.

The exhibition, hosting over 150 pieces, aims to illustrate how design and food have always been interrelated. View Spain's ingenious design solutions and contributions to the world of gastronomy, both current and historical, through art, photography and video on display. Learn the origins of "tapa", the unique way of sharing food in Spain. Examine cruets, bowl collections, wine bottles, paella pans, traditional wineskins and flasks like the bota, botijo and porrón, and so much more.

The content is divided into three sections:
  • The Kitchen, highlighting the instruments that help transform a chef's environment
  • The Table, showcasing the domestic objects created to serve and savour food on formal and informal occasions
  • The Menu, the whole design of food itself, from the more traditional to the more innovative avant-garde creations
Additional programming will include a Pecha Kucha-style panel featuring chefs, restaurant interior designers and food/kitchen product designers.

DXTalks: DAAN ROOSEGAARDE
May 8, 6:30pm

Using smart materials and microchips, Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde builds interactive landscapes that explore the relationships between space, people and technology. "It's not about high-tech, but more about high-social," he has said.

Working with a team of designers and technical experts at his social design lab, Studio Roosegaarde, he specializes in public space commissions, creating installations that respond to sound and movement that set the bar for technological innovation

Join DX as he discusses his work, which has been exhibited in cities across the globe, including London, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Roosegaarde is currently working with Dutch construction company Heijmans to develop the Smart Highway, a sustainable road system that uses dynamic paint, glow-in-the-dark lines and wind light to adapt to various traffic conditions. In Eindhoven, he recently completed the permanent installation of Crystals, a project where hundreds of LED rocks can be arranged in infinite configurations by passersby.

ADMISSION: $12 for Non-Members, available HERE. FREE for DX Members.

LOVEBOT INVASION
April 23

In celebration of Matthew Del Degan's Torontowide art project initiated in 2012 to spread love and kindness, Magic Pony and Design Exchange present the first ever Lovebot Designer Toy.

Created in a limited edition of 30, this five-inch eco resin Lovebot is adorned with vibrant colours, inspired by This Is Not A Toy's exhibition graphics. Just like its big brothers, it has been designed by Del Degan and will feature poseable arms and a removable heart. Each of these Canadian-made collectibles, retailing for $95, will be displayed in a wooden crate, accompanied by a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity.

Interested in taking a piece of love home? The release will take place at Design Exchange's This Is Not A Work Party on April 23, 2014.

ABOUT LOVEBOT
Led by designer and Lovebot creator Matthew Del Degan, The Robot Love Invasion (#LoveInvasion) is a Canadian-based art movement to share love and kindness. In August 2013, with a group of over 30 volunteers, Del Degan created a loveing army of 100+ 250 lb child-sized Lovebot statues. Each concrete monument acts as a catalyst to share love and kindness, and honours individuals or organizations that have made Toronto a better place. Lovebots and their corresponding stories can be discovered on lovebot.com.
