WHAT: 5KM Walk
13th annual Meagan’s Walk: Creating a Circle of Hope to raise awareness, and generate support for, children and families affected by paediatric brain tumours. The five kilometre walk, presented by Colliers International, starts at Fort York and ends with participants forming a giant human hug around The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). To date, Meagan’s Walk has raised more than $3.1 million.
THE YEAR OF THE HUG
2014 is “The Year of the Hug” for Meagan’s Walk – celebrating the wish of young Meagan to be able to hug the world and provide hope to those that are sick. When the walk ends and the participants create a circle to “hug” SickKids hospital, it is a powerful moment that symbolizes Meagan’s wish to embrace not only the families with sick children in the hospital but everyone in the community that helped Meagan’s Walk fulfill its goal. The hug is a coming together of a compassionate community. It represents strength in numbers, with everyone standing together hand in hand, working together for a better future.
HEALTHY AND HAPPY
Meagan’s Walk is part of Healthy and Happy, a SickKids campaign in May to educate and raise awareness in the community about children’s health issues. The theme of this year’s campaign is Healthy Active Living. Participating in Meagan’s Walk is a great way for families to be active and spend time outdoors.

8:30 a.m. Children’s activities and entertainment begin
8:30 a.m. Wall of Honour at starting area – participants encouraged to sign and offer dedications or wishes of support
8:45 a.m. Opening ceremonies
9:00 a.m. Interview opportunity with Denise Bebenek
10:00 a.m. Walk starts at Fort York
11:00 a.m. Participants begin arriving at SickKids to form human hug around the hospital
11:45 a.m. Hospital hug
11:50 a.m. Closing remarks (located in front of the hospital’s Elizabeth Street entrance)

About Meagan’s Walk
In 2000, Denise’s daughter Meagan was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour at four years old. This was something the family knew little about. It was not until they lost her six short months later that they learned brain tumours are the leading cause of cancerous death amongst children and teenagers up to the age of 20.
To Denise, it was a shocking statistic, and she knew something had to be done to get it under control. It was the start of an idea that became Meagan’s Walk. Denise wanted to honour her daughter while raising awareness and generating funds for paediatric brain tumour research.
