McDonald’s Boombox lets Canadians turn up the volume on summer fun
It may seem like an ordinary recyclable drink tray, but McDonald’s latest innovation will be helping Canadians enjoy more than just take out beverages and desserts this summer.
Dubbed the McDonald’s Boombox and created in partnership with McDonald’s, the University of Waterloo’s Audio Research Group and industrial design group Stacklab, the portable speaker will be made available at a one-day event at Toronto’s Woodbine Beach on July 28.
The McDonald’s Boombox began as an idea to inject some fun—and tunes—into the Canadian summer, and culminated in a high tech innovation that comes across in a pleasantly surprising low-tech package.
Quote from University of Waterloo:
“For our team, the McDonald’s Boombox was a dream project that allowed us to infuse high tech engineering and theoretical acoustics into an everyday item, and on behalf of a great brand in McDonald’s We’re delighted with the result and hope that everyone who gets their hands on one has as much fun as we did in helping bring it to life.”
—Janelle Resch, Project Lead, Audio Engineering Group, University of Waterloo PhD Candidate in Applied Mathematics
Facts:
- The McDonald’s Boombox is designed to be compatible with any sized smartphone, iPhone or Android
- The McDonald’s Boombox was scientifically engineered and lab tested for a design that increases sound pressure levels, effectively doubling a phone’s built-in maximum volume. Foil-stamped, double-cone polygon speakers help amplify sound volume and quality, while minimizing sound leakage. A special slot allows for phone stability and easy menu control
- The McDonald’s Boombox helps achieve a maximum decibel level of 70.4 dB, which in everyday terms is roughly the same volume as a vacuum cleaner being used. For comparison, whispering registers at roughly 20-30 dB, and normal conversations top out at approximately 60 dB
- The McDonald’s Boombox is 100% recyclable
- The McDonald’s Boombox will be produced in extremely limited quantities and available while supplies last as part of a one-time promotion for McFlurry desserts at Woodbine Beach in Toronto on July 28
