FORMULA 1® ♥’s Mexico

F1’s love affair with the Formula 1 Gran Premio de Mexico continues

Since its return to the FIA Formula 1 World Championship calendar, the Formula 1 Gran Premio de Mexico has made it’s mark on both the international F1 fan community and the working F1 fraternity, including drivers, teams and the media. Twice winner of the coveted FIA Best Promoter’s Trophy, the Mexico race has become known for the passion and energy of its fans and the extra lengths that the race promoters, CIE, go to in producing a world class sporting event.

Hosting the race has firmly placed Mexico City and Mexico in the global spotlight, with the race promoters keen to make the most of the opportunity to showcase the capabilities of the country and the warmth of its people. National F1 hero Sergio Pérez has also gone a long way towards cementing Mexico as a top F1 destination firmly in the hearts and minds of F1 fans around the world.

Pérez isn’t the only driver to vocalise his passion for Mexico, many of his counterparts including current World Champion, Nico Rosberg, former World Champion, Lewis Hamilton and championship contenders Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg have spoken out in support of the race. Earlier in the season Hamilton, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg and Perez were all proudly presented with limited edition jackets by Mexican designer Anuar Layón bearing the tongue-in-cheek slogan: “Mexico Is The Shit,” this being urban slang for “Mexico is Cool.” Layón is one of the architects of the popular campaign which has taken social media by storm.

Commenting on the campaign Anuar Layón said: “It is a tribute to all those Mexicans around the world that are shifting global culture with their beautiful hearts and brilliant minds; it’s a way to show that we are many and we are together; that we are raising the standards, reminding the world that our voice matters. “Mexico Is The Shit” is a community, a support system and a movement inspiring love, respect and trust!”

Sergio Pérez, Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg joined singers, models and hundreds of international personalities, who have been part of this viral campaign.

"The more I know the world, the prouder I feel to be a Mexican," said Pérez, reminiscing about his origins. "The return of F1 to my country is a sign that when Mexicans get together we can achieve anything. It is a great opportunity to showcase to the world what Mexico really is and what we are capable of achieving."

Commenting on his enthusiasm for the country from first hand experience, Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo said: ”The Mexican Grand Prix is a mix between a massive sporting event and at the same time a great concert. I love Mexican food and yeah, obviously, a little bit of tequila. I love the passion from the Mexican audience!”

Renault Sport F1 driver, Nico Hülkenberg also commented: "Mexican fans are very passionate, enthusiastic, and a little crazy in a good way. They are really cheerful and very supportive. They are a little louder and outspoken and they show their emotions and their passion, which is great."

CIE’s Director of Marketing for the Formula 1 Grand Prix, Rodrigo Sanchez said: “As with Anuar Layón and Sergio Perez, many more Mexicans continue to demonstrate that our people are much more than the stereotypes, that there is a modern, industrious, entrepreneurial Mexico. A Mexico that stands out for doing things exceptional, a country that is home to the best promoted event in the Formula 1 calendar and a nation that is capable of setting trends and showcasing the pride of a people around the world.”
