The manhunt for former NBA player Javaris Crittenton ended at a Southern California airport on (August 30). Police arrested the one-time Los Angeles Lakers guard as he tried to board a flight to Atlanta, where he faces murder charges in the death of 23-year-old Julian Jones.
Crittenton’s lawyers say their client was on his way to Atlanta to turn himself in to police, who have been looking for him since Jones was killed during a drive-by shooting on August 19. Defense attorney Eldridge Suggs maintains that Crittenton was not in the vehicle and will be cleared of all wrongdoing.
According to the Associated Press, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office plans to charge Crittenton today with being a fugitive from justice. If Crittenton waives extradition he’ll be sent to Atlanta to stand trial.
Atlanta police believe the former Georgia Tech standout opened fire on men that robed him of expensive jewelry back in April. The shots missed their intended target, hitting Jones, a mother of four, instead.
Jones and 18-year-old Trontavious Stephens were outside her home when a black Chevy Tahoe Hybrid pulled up and started shooting. It is not clear if Stephens was the target, but the teen told the AP he does not know Crittenton.
