The only known photo-matched game-used UCLA jersey worn by Lew Alcindor has now been conclusively photo-matched to the 1968 NCAA National Championship Game on March 23, 1968, where UCLA defeated North Carolina 78-55 to capture the program's fourth NCAA Championship under legendary coach John Wooden. Even more remarkably, the jersey has also been matched to photographs of Alcindor wearing the jersey during UCLA's iconic net-cutting championship celebration, directly linking the artifact to one of the biggest moments in college basketball history.
The jersey has also been photo-matched to multiple games throughout UCLA's historic 1968-69 championship season, including the March 20th, 1969 NCAA Final Four victory over Drake at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. Alcindor finished the national semifinal with 25 points, 21 rebounds, and three assists, leading UCLA one step closer to an unprecedented third consecutive NCAA Championship.
The extraordinary multi-season photo-matching demonstrates that while many championship teams of the era were commonly issued new uniforms for championship games, this very jersey was not retired after UCLA's 1968 title victory. Instead, it remained in Alcindor's regular rotation throughout the following championship season, making it an exceptionally rare surviving example of documented multi-season use by one of basketball's greatest players.
