Cool Sweepings the World's first Black Curling Comedy TV Series Premieres October 30th
What happens when a group of Jamaican-Canadian friends who know almost nothing about curling decide to enter a $50,000 bonspiel to save a struggling Winnipeg curling rink?
The answer is Cool Sweepings, a new four-episode sports comedy series premiering October 30th on Bell Fibe TV1.
Created and produced by Winnipeg filmmaker Chris Sharpe, founder of Black Film Space Manitoba, the series brings Caribbean energy, Canadian winter culture, music and comedy together in an unconventional underdog story. Behind the laughter is a remarkable real-life journey: Sharpe spent 18 years trying to get the project made before finally receiving the green light from Bell Fibe TV1. The idea for Cool Sweepings began nearly two decades ago with a simple creative question: What would happen if Jamaican-Canadian kids from Winnipeg took on one of Canada's most recognizable winter sports?
Inspired by the spirit of underdog sports comedies, Sharpe envisioned a series that would introduce audiences to curling through a fresh cultural perspective while celebrating the diversity of Canadian life. However, turning that vision into a television production proved challenging. Over the next 18 years, Sharpe continued pursuing the project while building his career in film, television, music and live entertainment. Despite repeated rejection, limited resources and the challenges he refused to abandon the concept. Ultimately, Sharpe created so much early buzz offline, that it inspired a sold-out Cool Sweepings 24-team Winnipeg curling bonspiel.
“There were challenges, setbacks and moments when giving up would have been easier, but I never stopped believing in this story. My message to every filmmaker, artist, entrepreneur and dreamer is simple: Never give up on your dreams. One YES can change everything. Keep believing, creating and pushing forward. Your time will come.”
Set in Winnipeg, Cool Sweepings follows Chris, a Jamaican-Canadian teenager juggling low-paying jobs while his family's curling rink faces foreclosure. With time running out, his friends Fillmore, Denny and DJ Nate convince him to enter a major curling competition offering a $50,000 prize. There's just one problem - they don't know how to curl.
With the help of coach Kyra, the inexperienced team attempts to master the sport while navigating family pressures, rival competitors, personal challenges and plenty of hilarious moments on the ice.
At its heart, the series explores what happens when young people from different cultural backgrounds challenge expectations, discover new opportunities and come together to fight for something they believe in. The result is a family-friendly Canadian sports comedy that combines the competitive excitement of curling with Jamaican-Canadian humour and an inspiring message of perseverance. What also makes Cool Sweepings unique is that all four leading actors - Joshua Calder, Darryan Edwards, Nathan Zayac and Dillin Morgan - are also recording artists who contributed songs to the original soundtrack album. The album blends hip-hop, rap, R&B and Caribbean-inspired musical influences with themes of determination, friendship, and Canadian winter life.
