Canadian rapper and admired motivational speaker, D.O. (Defy the Odds), is
set to release his fourth studio album, Down Home, on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 (Northstarr
Entertainment). The lead single "Capture The Moonlight" features special guests Saukrates and Joell
Oritz. Produced entirely by JUNO Award winner Classified - Down Home is a 10-track collaborative effort
that enlists the help of notable Canadian artists including Chad Hatcher, Jake Boyd, J-Bru, Joell Ortiz,
Maestro Fresh Wes, Mic Boyd, Saukrates and Spesh K. Down Home will be available on iTunes and all
digital retailers via Believe Digital.
"This project was fun for me because for awhile I wasn't sure if I still wanted to do music. Now that I have a
couple of kids it's tough to get away like I used to," says D.O. "The last few years have been great
though. Touring through Asia and Europe has exposed me to a whole new fan base and has helped grow
my sound."
D.O. credits his inspiration for the album from the opening intro on Classified's album Handshake's and
Middle Fingers along with his deep connection to Nova Scotia where he spent his summers visiting family
heading "down home." The album displays D.O's musical and cultural influences playing on his personality
and songwriting, which can be heard through the lead single "Capture The Moonlight" and "Nothings The
Way It Seems."
"One of my favourite tracks on this album is 'Never Gets Old.' I told Mic Boyd that I wanted him to work with
me on the hook for that one so we were just in the studio vibing and it was great how this song came
together. Another day Chad Hatcher came by. We kicked it for a minute and got to business - Down Home
was the end result. I wanted an up-tempo vibe on the album, and I think we succeeded with that. It's going to
be fun to play these songs live!"
To date, D.O has celebrated great success throughout North America as a solo artist, motivational speaker
and as one half of the duo Art of Fresh. His first solo album released in 2007, Northstarr, earned him instant
recognition gaining a nomination for a Toronto Independent Music Award. In Art of Fresh, singles "Out Of
This World" (Feb 2009) and "Amerika" (Feb 2014) hit #1 on the US College Hip-Hop Radio Charts, building
opportunities for the duo to perform in Croatia at Fresh Island Fest- Europe's biggest beach festivalperforming
alongside Snoop Dog and ASAP Rocky. They reached international audiences with
performances at the CMJ music festival in New York and MIDEM in Cannes France. In the last two years,
the group has touredCanada twice, Europe (France, UK, Netherlands), Asia (Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong)
and the US (Miami, NYC, Vegas). Throughout this string of releases and constant domestic and
international touring, D.O. also found time to build his label, Northstarr Entertainment, establishing himself
as a go to music executive for independent artists. Northstarr Entertainment has represented up to 15 artists
worldwide.
In anticipation of the release of Down Home, D.O. will perform various dates to celebrate his new release
and promote his school tour initiative, Stay Driven, a speaking series aimed at educating children on the
importance of anti-bullying and anti-racism.
