The newest single by Yebo Music's Matty Rico, "Hello Hello", premieres
today on HipHop DX. With a classic beat, shining synth, and Matty's
singalong type lyrical delivery, you'll think that summer came early
this year.
Matty Rico last track "Miss You", which is a flip on "Miss You" by the
fast-rising English producer Mura Masa, premiered on Milk Made. The
track features Charlie Brand of Miniature Tigers (who recently appeared
on Skizzy Mars newest release The Red Balloon EP).
Hailing from Chicago, stopping off in L.A., and taking root in
Brooklyn, Matty Rico's sound is truly unique. Fans of such conscious yet
admittedly pop-friendly artists as J.Cole and Chance the Rapper will
find a familiar yet fresh take on witty, gratifying contemporary hip-hop
with classic roots.
After making his mark on the blogs with the strong-willed New American
mixtape in 2013, Rico tucked away for 2014 to hone in on a cleaner
sound. With new producers, including B3 (Bobby Wooten) and Steve Metz,
as well as features from upcoming songwriters Doe Paoro and Bryce Fox,
Rico's contemporary shift toward pop sensibilities and anthemic hooks is
indicative of his personal journey.
Balancing writing with the day-to-day grind is nothing new to Rico. It
took uprooting himself and moving to New York to tune out the noise and
craft his most realized work to date.
High Hopes, his upcoming full-length mixtape has a little
something for everyone - from the throwback Tribe sounds to the
unabashed odes to whisky, it's a requiem for growing up. Which, through
rap or not, we all gotta do sometime.
