2015 is a landmark year in global affairs across all economic, social and environmental spectrums. It marks the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations and is a critical milestone for the United Nations General Assembly. At this historic moment, the international community reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development, designating 2015 as the year of global action.
United in this commitment, the 2015 South-South Awards brings to the stage and celebrates the impactful strides made in fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals and puts a spotlight on the imperative for a new and rededicated commitment to implement the Sustainable Development Goals which are aimed at building a better and safer world for people and planet. Held in the iconic Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the South-South Awards promotes the implementation of the MDGs around the world by recognizing exceptional contributions on the part of heads of state and government, business and civil society leaders as well as leading philanthropists and top celebrities. The awards honor distinguished countries, individuals and organizations that embody transformative sustainable development worldwide; particularly in the areas of poverty reduction, education advancement and humanitarian impact. It is a celebration of multilateral partnerships concerned with uplifting the world’s most vulnerable populations.
The South-South Awards is co-organized by the Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda the United Nations, the South-South Steering Committee for Sustainable Development, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the International Telecommunication Union, and the International Organization for the South-South Cooperation.
