“The Home of Underground Boxing.” That’s not just a marketing ploy or clever tagline. Adapted from a series of illegal boxing parties and housed in a former activist hangout, Overthrow’s claim to the gritty underground is as palpable as the ancient graffiti splattered across its doors. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, 9 Bleecker was a meeting place for people who went against the grain— a countercultural hotspot where progressive thinkers gathered to challenge the system and orchestrate a revolution with the help of their monthly publication, “Overthrow.”
Countless influential characters like Abbie Hoffman, Hunter S. Thompson, and Joey Ramone passed through these doors to partake in the uprising. They were the purveyors of an underground lifestyle that long defined East Village as Manhattan’s edgiest hood.
