Alexander 23 Charts His Artistic Journey On New Single and Video "How To Drive"

Alexander 23 celebrates his birthday with the release of his heartfelt new single, “How to Drive.” Vulnerable and intimate, the self-penned and self-produced track represents the growth of the GRAMMY®-nominated singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist as he heads into the next stage of his creative evolution. That sense of finality is reflected in the suitably emotional video.

“How to Drive,” which boasts cover art by Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment, explores the confusion and wonder that comes with adulthood—posing questions that may not have an answer. “It feels like all my friends, they feel the same way,” Alexander sings over delicate keys. “The candles take more breath on every birthday.” The existential ponderings don’t end there, as he adds: “I know I should shut up, enjoy the ride — but nobody ever taught me how to drive.”

Contemplative and full of longing, the bittersweet anthem’s video is composed of touching footage taken from home movies. From glimpses of Alexander’s childhood to more recent clips of him performing on stage or checking out the sites on tour, it encapsulates the full extent of his incredible journey thus far.

“How to Drive” — which is also accompanied by a 10-minute “making of” vignette filmed at Electric Lady Studios — follows the release of his lovesick track “ILL,” featuring acclaimed producer, Kenny Beats. Prior to that he released his debut studio album Aftershock, produced alongside Dan Nigro and features the introspective hit “Hate Me If It Helps,” co-written with Olivia Rodrigo, and the grief-stricken “The Hardest Part.” Those releases were the perfect end to a banner 2022 which led to supporting John Mayer on tour, performing at several festivals including Lollapalooza, Life Is Beautiful, Firefly, and more, and headline his first-ever North American, UK & European tour. This spring he’s set to open for girl in red on a string of European dates and this summer he will perform at The Governors Ball in New York.

While “How to Drive” bookends an end, it also signals the start of an exciting new phase for an artist that continues to astound with each and every new release.
