ALCVIN RYUZEN RAMOS
On March 15, 2014, NAGATA SHACHU will welcome leading shakuhachi—Japanese end-blown bamboo flute—player Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos for an exclusive performance at the Brigantine Room at Harbourfront Centre, as part of NAGATA SHACHU’s 15th Anniversary season. A multi-instrumentalist and composer, Ramos will collaborate with NAGATA SHACHU leader Kiyoshi Nagata, and the full ensemble, for an exciting program of new works, improvisation, traditional Japanese folk songs, and exhilarating drumming.
Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos is one of the leading teachers and performers of the shakuhachi in the world today. Ramos experiments with new ways of playing traditional instruments as well as with synthesized and electronic music. He has taught and performed all over North America, Europe and Japan. After decades of studying and playing, he has created a unique playing style which effortlessly flows between the worlds of music and meditation.
Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos’ career includes collaborations with distinguished artists such as John McLaughlin, Hun Huur Tuu Mongolian Throat Singers, Giorgio Magnanensi and Joseph “Pepe” Danza. He has also shared stages with Anoushka Shankar and the Yoshida Brothers.
NAGATA SHACHU will continue their 15th Anniversary celebrations with their season at Harbourfront Centre. On June 13, 2014 NAGATA SHACHU will join forces with Toronto’s Korean drum and dance powerhouse, Jeng Yiat the Enwave Theatre. These two highly acclaimed groups will work together to create new music and dance works rooted in the traditional performing arts of Japan, Korea and beyond!
NAGATA SHACHU (formerly Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble), based in Toronto, Canada, has enthralled audiences with its mesmerizing and heart-pounding performances of the Japanese taiko drum since its formation 15 years ago. The ensemble has toured widely throughout North America and overseas, performing in theatres, concert halls, and major music festivals.
